Attention drives human numerosity selective responses

چکیده

Introduction Numerosity, the set size of a group items, helps guide behaviour and decisions. Previous studies have shown that neural populations respond selectively to numerosities. How numerosity is extracted from visual scene longstanding debate, often contrasting low-level with high-level cognitive processes. Here, using 7T functional MRI, we investigate how attention influences selective responses. Method 4 participants took part in three experiments. In all experiments, stimuli consisted black white dots within same display, participants’ was focused on either or while detecting subtle shape change attended dot subset. Experiment1, systematically increased 1 7, decreased 26 20, keeping total constant at 27. summarized fMRI signals responding subset’s population receptive field modelling (Dumoulin & Wandell, 2008). experiments2, used 2x2 block design establish response preferred, but unattended The subset consisting 2/3/4 (the preferred numerosities) were presented being unattended, respectively. fixed 40 non-preferred numerosities varied 36-38. Experiment 3 only one 20 shown, as result, varied. responses experiments 2-3 analysed general linear models. Results We found numerosity-tuned when their numerosity, irrespective Without attention, inhibited. Conclusions Unlike traditional effects cortex where enhances already existing responses, our results suggest required drive

Independent Recognition of Numerosity Requires Attention

The overlap of numerical and non-numerical properties in concrete object arrays raises the question of how these input dimensions interact. Two studies were conducted to address this question and showed that changing the object identity (while retaining the numerosity) and changing the numerosity (while retaining the object identity) both resulted in attenuated recognition of object arrays. How...

Spontaneous summation or numerosity-selective coding?

INTRODUCTION A key debate in numerical cognition concerns the neural code for number representation (e.g., Nieder and Merten, 2007; Roggeman et al., 2007; Viswanathan and Nieder, 2013). One idea is that individual neurons are tuned to individual numbers, with decreasing response to numbers with increasing distance (numerosity-selective coding or labeled-line coding). An alternative, more implic...

Feature-Based Attention Modulates Orientation-Selective Responses in Human Visual Cortex

How does feature-based attention modulate neural responses? We used adaptation to quantify the effect of feature-based attention on orientation-selective responses in human visual cortex. Observers were adapted to two superimposed oblique gratings while attending to one grating only. We measured the magnitude of attention-induced orientation-selective adaptation both psychophysically, by the be...

Selective Attention Modulates Human Auditory Brainstem Responses: Relative Contributions of Frequency and Spatial Cues

Selective attention is the mechanism that allows focusing one's attention on a particular stimulus while filtering out a range of other stimuli, for instance, on a single conversation in a noisy room. Attending to one sound source rather than another changes activity in the human auditory cortex, but it is unclear whether attention to different acoustic features, such as voice pitch and speaker...

Selective visual-spatial attention alters induced gamma band responses in the human EEG.

OBJECTIVES The present study was designed to investigate the attentional modulation of gamma band responses in a visual spatial attention task using a 128-channel-EEG-montage. METHODS Colored rectangles were presented on a screen. After 500 ms an arrow indicated whether subjects had to shift their attention to the left or right half of the screen to detect target stimuli. During the task, eit...
